Chubby cheeks and cheeky grin, that’s that little ladies speciality.

Julia, her husband and daughter came along to one of my recent mini-sessions. Most kids are a bit shy when they first meet the photographer, not so this little madam. Cute beyond belief she immediately set out to charm me and entertain us all. Successfully.

I obviously get to know the people a little bit during the session, but I often get to know them even more when I edit the photos. The little loving glances, the small touch of hand when they are not aware I am taking a photo, it’s these small things, that often makes me want to hug the people, because it’s so lovely.

And now I am a bit teary, because my “job” makes me so happy. There you go.

If you want to book a slot for this weekends mini-session then go here: https://bookwhen.com/melaniemartinphotographycouk

I love shooting digital, I really do, but sometimes, there is just something so precious about shooting on film and a different kind of beauty achieved that you simply do not get with digital.

I recently shot a roll of medium format film and when I took the film I found a roll I had forgotten to develop, so I had that processed too. Oh the excitement to find some precious photos. For those of you interested, I shot those with a Holga, which is essentially a toy camera with a plastic lens. It’s almost impossible to get any more low end. Well you can, but it’s pretty basic. There are light leaks, it’s hard to predict the results and that is exactly the fun of it. It’s playing. And playing is good.

So since it’s Friday, and I feel in a joyous mood seeing those rolls coming back from the lab, I thought I share some of the shots with you.

Happy weekend, y’all.

As you may have gathered I have soon another chance for families to take part in my family mini-sessions and I thought I share with you some photos from the sessions I did in February.

The funny thing was that when Karen came along that she mentioned that she is a friend of someone who I shot a wedding for 2 years ago. So that was lovely. And Karen was so lovely and her family is beautiful, the little boy has stolen my heart.

There were so many pictures from our 20 minutes together but here I am only sharing a few with you. I will be blogging some more of the sessions over the next week or so to give you an idea what kind of shots you can expect in 20 minutes.

If you are interested to book one of the slots on the 5th of May then go here.

I love a fresh baby and this one was particularly cute.

And he is such a little heart breaker. Girls watch out when he is older, he is going to steal your heart.

I love a nice family picture. It’s so rare for everyone to be in the picture unless you have them taken right?

I say it again: cute as sweet pie.

Yesterday, I went on a little adventure. It was really very little, no Northpole Expedition or Himalayan trekking. No, I simply did something I have never done before and went somewhere I never been before. That’s the thing about adventuring: there is no rules to it. It’s so easy to think that you have no time for an adventure, because you are busy or thinking that the adventure is not big enough to be called an adventure. Really? I hope you may – like me – rethink that approach because an adventure is anything you call by that name.

Yesterday’s adventure took all in all 90 minutes. Yes, of course, I could have worked in those 90 minutes. Yes, I am busy, busy, busy… I only wrote about my to do list the other day, but there is something magical about taking some time for yourself and doing something new, because you simply never know what may occur, what you may meet and what you may realise.

My adventure did not result in anything life shattering, but I had a good time with myself. No checking of twitter, no checking of emails, no taking photos. Just me. It is so hard these days to spend time just by yourself because it’s so easy to surround yourself with the noise of others, a constant stream of thoughts that aren’t your own because that small device is so easy to carry around with you and the habit to check what others are doing is so, so hard to break.

As I was driving towards the adventure I drove past a little side road, that I must have passed a thousand times. The road is called: “Intended Street” (this is no joke) and I had to laugh because I wasn’t turning into the Intended Street, I was driving right past it… if there has ever been a sign or a metaphor… well that was it.

As to what I did on my little adventure, I will keep that to myself. It’s one of these things that may sound silly when spoken out loud but are precious when kept quiet.

Let me know if you sometimes go on adventures all by yourself, I’d love to know.

I really have fallen in love with these two, both are such caring souls and they really, really look out for each other. And before they have even said one word of their vows they really know what it means “to love each other through sickness and health, for better and worse”.

We met at the little park behind Cadbury in Bournville Birmingham and I love when I get to find a new place that I wasn’t aware off. Bournville is lovely anyway, but this little park is such a hidden treasure and it was really a wonderful location to do the pre-wedding shoot.

Like most men (and women), Darren hardly wanted to the pre-wedding shoot, as he was like so many anxious about the camera and thought he would feel silly and awkward. However, after only a few minutes both relaxed and we had a good time.

The pre-wedding sessions are for me such an important part of the wedding journey with my couples because it gives me the chance to really get to know them. I often say that my couple’s wedding days are just as important to me as they are to them.

I also find that I see much more about a couples’ relationship through the lens as merely talking to them, but enough of me talking here: over to some wonderful pictures of Michelle and Darren.

I certainly cannot wait for their wedding now.

School holidays are fun, there is no doubt about it. It feels like a big long treat where time moves at a different pace and there is nothing to do apart from having fun. However, when you work for yourself this is really half the story. The reality is that for me, as my own boss, the other half is that there is much less time to do stuff. Which is in turn growing the to do list.

Now, in the past, this would have caused me lots of anxious moments and a troubled feeling in my tummy area. And that, guys, is not fun. So, I have decided a while ago to attempt a different approach. School holidays hardly ever happen unexpected, right, so I can plan for it. I can also plan what I realistically can achieve in those hours I have to work and be kind to myself. No. 1 priority is to spend time with the kid, No. 2 is to manage expectations of everyone I work with what can be expected of me during those two weeks of Easter. This keeps me sane and everyone else around me hopefully happy and contented.

And yes, it’s back to proper work now and this means that I work my way through the to do list including blogging etc and planning for the big one: the summer holidays, where I will have to find some sort of activity for the kid so I can work more.

Tomorrow I will also announce the new family mini-sessions and the couple mini-sessions, so that is exciting.

Still, I find it kind of bewildering that the kid going to school is the normality and holiday is not the norm.

… a faster way to blog lots of photos in one go. Thanks to all the peeps out there creating wonderful tutorials. So amazingly helpful.

The coolest experience of the past week was…

… seeing my five year old daughter coming up with craft ideas all by herself. Working out how to make a paper daffodil was probably my personal highlight with her using an old egg box and craft paper. No help or input from me.

The thing I realized this week is…

…staying positive and grateful is worth the effort.

I am looking forward to…

… to another week of Easter holiday with my kid.

I know for sure…

… that using an egg more for pasta dough will result in better pasta.

When people think about business they either find the prospect easy or difficult. Especially so when it comes to finding the RIGHT client. Since attending a few networking meetings, I have been privy to many referrals sessions where people claim that anyone is a right client for them.

I have long realised that although I technically like anyone unless otherwise shown, I no longer believe that anyone is a right client for me.

I often get enquiries for studio shots for example. However, I don’t do studio shots, although I could, but it’s just not what I want to do. So, they are not the right client for me, but the right client for a studio photographer.

Most of my clients are women. Women that book me for a family shoot, women that book me for a maternity session or a Hot Shots session, women who book me for their wedding (let’s face it guys, it’s mainly the ladies that choose) and women who buy gift vouchers and enquire with me.

But it’s even more specific than that, most of the women I do sessions with are utterly caring people. They care for the families, they care for other people often they even have a job in some sort of “caring” capacity. Somehow, I seem to click with those people. And I want to show those women that is “a-ok” to care for themselves to and that they can look fabulous in photos.

My ideal client is also someone who likes to spread the word about me. 80% of my business is through referral. Yep, that’s right. This is the biggest compliment ever for me, because my clients are happy and then they go away and tell other people about me. And that is fabulous.

I like to have fun and my clients do too. There is a lot of laughter.

My clients like the great outdoors. That’s why they choose a session with me. They like to look at photos and they want to display photos in their home that look a bit different and that are meaningful to them. They often choose a location that means something to them.

My clients have a story to tell and I am there to capture the story at that given moment in time with my camera.

So really, it’s just about you and me at the end of the day. And yes, to me this is not just business, this is super personal.

I have a to do list the size of a small country – imagine Switzerland – once again. And it’s the Easter holidays…

Still, I am not complaining, I enjoy spending time with my girl, there is precious little time doing that when they go to school, so I make the most of it, while I can. And there are always the evenings like now… when I wait for albums to upload, photos to export and for my lab to send me email confirmation for print orders.

It is really the lot of the working mother, especially when you work from home and although I wouldn’t want it to be any other way, there are certainly those moments when I feel that cloning is a really brilliant idea and please science hurry up and make it happen. My husband asked me once, when I ranted about not having any clones, what I would do when I didn’t need the clones… Honestly? What a question… There is plenty going on in my life to keep at least 4 clones happily occupied…

Yes, that's a butterfly on the small person's delighted head

In the meantime, I can highly recommend going to the Butterfly Farm in Stratford, Dharma was so desperate for a butterfly to go on her hand… I have a ton of pictures with miscellaneous butterfly and Dharma’s hand. Still, one landed on her head and one on her shirt… so she was happy. Considering she screams blue murder when even the smallest bug approaches her (except for ladybirds) then it’s quite amazing how keen she was. I guess butterflies are pretty and Dharma loves pretty things.

And yes, another one on her shirt.

While in Stratford go to Mida Mediterrenean Coffee House – especially when you have children – since the owner is sooooooooooo nice to kids. It makes you realise that often kids are barely tolerated in this country, mostly ignored… he made my daughter laugh and a little boy at the next table feel so special as he referred to him as “Sir” and exclaimed what a gentleman he was. It was really lovely, actually makes me teary…

And today a little excursion with friends to Evesham. We went on the little railway at Evesham Country Park and into town for a play in the playground next to the River (cool playground) and then for some refreshments to the Word of Mouth Cafe. Again, a lovely cafe and the children devoured a mars bar cake (looked great) and a malteser brownie (looked good too), obviously they didn’t share with us. There is the irrevocable rule of “one must not share one’s cake items with the grown ups” where those two are concerned. Still, we got the odd dandelion on the way, so it’s not all misery.

Anyhow, things are uploaded, so I can continue with work. I’ll catch you later.

… and I didn’t take pictures, oh well.

As a Wedding Supplier in Birmingham and a regular networker, I have been dreaming of setting up a networking event solely for wedding suppliers…And now I finally did it and the first ever meeting has come to a close.

10 lovely ladies gathered around a table in the Kings Head Pub, Bearwood, and we chatted all things bride and grooms, grooms and grooms and brides and brides.

The reason I have been wanting to set up a networking event specifically for the wedding sector is – in my eyes simple:

1.) We all have the same customers.

2.) We face similar issues, challenges and opportunities

3.) Being able to recommend good suppliers to couples is priceless

4.) It’s good to leave the office and build relationships

So if you are a wedding supplier and are interested in coming a long, then please drop me a line via the contact me page. The next meeting is Wednesday, 18th April.
